The Workshops - 1
| The Workshops (now Davies and Davies Ltd.) started in 1969 and quickly became recognised for its specialisation in exact copies of Dutch, Flemish and Mid-European frames. These frames continue to be built from traditional materials such as Ebony, Cocoa-bola, Panga-Panga, Palisander / Rosewood Ziracote and African Blackwood. |

The Company is aware of the increasing ecological problems in many forests and the need to use plantation grown woods wherever possible.
|
 |
The frames are built using traditional materials such as those outlined above.
Copy carving began in 1976 using a variety of European woods such as Pear, Apple, Lime, Walnut, Oak and Pine.

For a new model of frame to be created, cutters must be made for the machine that produces the profiles.
The Company is possibly unique in having a special department for cutter and jig making. Each design is individually copied onto a metal template, which is then hand-guided through a machine (as illustrated). The result is a set of precision-made cutters that accurately follow the original wihtout loss of any detail.
Bespoke cutter making is one of the most important services offered to our clients. |
 |
The Company began by using a variety of jigs and machines, as used in the 17th Century.
For the most discerning client there is still no alternative other than to manufacture in the traditional manner.
However, to meet the challenge of today and remain competitive, the company has also heavily invested in sophisticated modern machines (as illustrated). |
