In readiness for 2018’s TEFAF fair in Maastricht, a frame was made for a monumental equestrian portrait by de Crayer of Gaspar de Gruzman, Conde-Duque de Olivares dating from the 1620’s. The painting was around 3 metres by 2 metres so for ease of movement and transport the frame was built in four parts to be constructed on site at the fair. The frame can then be taken down into 4 pieces for all future moves should it be required. It was constructed on an aluminium base to ensure it had the required strength to support a painting of this size. The 13.5cm moulding, with a running reed and scrolled acanthus leaf pattern, replicates a ‘house style’ found on paintings formerly in the Spanish Royal collection now in the Prado.
